                                                           Understanding of Copyright

Knowledge of copyright.

Intellectual property is when someone creates an original idea which they can use to make money from. You can either put in place a copyright or a patent to ensure your piece is not stolen.

Copyright: A legal right that prevents the use of your work ( once been presented physically ) being taken, stolen or sold without permission from the creator. The online government website has very good details and information covering this topic: https://www.gov.uk/topic/intellectual-property/copyright ( 1/5/17)

How Can I protect myself? : As a live performing musician, it is essential I have protection over my original songs that I am presenting to the public to prevent them being stolen. One of the easiest and fastest ways to copyright my own creations is by posting my material to myself by recorded delivery with the date and signing visible on the envelope.  By doing this I am enabling protection of my material for my life span and also another seventy years on top of that.

PRS: It is worthwhile for myself to start thinking about joining PRS if I am wanting to generate an income from my own songs that I have written. This society /organisation aims to distribute royalties fairly to yourself as a musician when you have performed. The organisation will give me a guidance and advice on my performing rights and royalties I would be earning from my original songs

PRS Licensed Premises: Payed to musician quarterly.

When someone creates a piece of work they have the legal right to have it protected by Copyright. Copyright takes place as soon as creator has written the piece in 'tangible' form.

Here's a copy of the 1988 copyright declaration

Patent is a form of protection in which you can use to stop people abusing your intellectual property, it enables you to take legal action against anyone who claims to have your creation or claims to be the creator of your creation. Patent can last up to five years of protection for your piece of work.
